Health & Wellness - "Horses as Healers"
Horses are known for reflecting human emotions. They are social and intuitive animals that are emotional to human body language. They do not judge people and accept them for who they are. They are empathetic and can sense when people are feeling down or struggling, providing them reassurance. Horses are loyal which shows their sense of trustworthiness and helps in forming strong bonds. Jake and Joey are gentle giants and the epitome of these statements. They have an amazing connection to Blair Reid, their owner and partner in Heavy Horse Chore Team competitions and in connecting to people of all ages, like Liam at 18 months old to 92 year old Harold who fondly remembers working with his own animals.
Equine therapy is often used to help people with disabilities such as autism, post-traumatic stress disorder, anxiety, depression and addic- tions. There are several types of equine therapies – Therapeutic Riding, Hippotherapy, Equine-Facilitated Psychotherapy, Equine-Assisted Learning, and Equine-Assisted Occupational Therapy. As there are different therapies, there is also different methods and techniques: Ground-Based Activities, Riding and Equine-Assisted Activities, and Therapeutic Horsemanship.
Equine therapy is healing through horses. It helps children, teenagers and adults by developing a connection between horse and human. It supports people to become better in-tune with their emotions, strengths and vulnerabilities. It further helps in building self confidence, setting clear goals and taking new challenges. And sometimes its just fun!
